The Montreal Canadiens GM search has kicked into its next gear with interviews set to commence this week. Sources say the Habs plan on speaking with as many as 10 candidates in the first phase of interviews (to be conducted via Zoom).

As I tweeted Sunday, Roberto Luongo (Florida), Daniel Briere (Philadelphia) and Mathieu Darche (Tampa Bay) are confirmed candidates the Canadiens plan to interview after receiving the green light to do so. But, again, they are among several candidates.

Veteran agent Kent Hughes is not believed to be part of this first round of interviews and, as I’ve said before, it’s not clear if the Habs GM job is something Hughes truly wants. He’s happy in his current role. But I suppose we should see how this first round of interviews goes and whether Jeff Gorton decides to take a run at Hughes later on or instead feels that within this first round of interviews the Habs find the person they really want. My guess is, given the long list of candidates the Canadiens plan to interview, they will find their GM somewhere on their initial list.

There is no firm timeline on when a GM hire might ultimately happen, but I would think by the end of the month the Canadiens will have a pretty clear idea.
