The Athletic: Martin Lapointe was named director of amateur scouting in January on top of his existing title of director of player personnel, replacing Shane Churla after he left to join the Florida Panthera two months earlier. With Timmins now gone, it is Lapointe who is coordinating the Canadiens’ group of 12 amateur scouts.

So far, the Canadiens’ amateur scouts are following the travel schedule they were assigned at the beginning of the season. The first real test of Lapointe’s administrative abilities will come at the beginning of January, after the world juniors, when the group holds its midseason meetings. It is at these meetings that an initial master list of players the Canadiens will follow more closely is formed. Reacting to these shifts in priorities and organizing the scouts in the field was apparently one of Timmins’ strengths, but it is something that will now be handled by Lapointe.

And when it comes time to make up the Canadiens’ final draft board, it will seemingly be Lapointe making the final call on that as well after going to see the top players on that board in person following the recommendations of international crossover scout Serge Boisvert and chief European scout Christer Rockstrom.
